I am going to call this the first part restored. Not sure if it exactly is, but it is close! This was kind of a big milestone (to me) for a few reasons. The first is that while new parts can always be purchased, there is a certain satisfaction to taking something old, rusty, and crusty and making it look new again. I am a sucker for history (I like old things!), so being able to keep some of the original car from 1970 even while so much will be replaced is important to me. The second reason this is a big milestone is that it really signified to me that the car was as stripped as I would get it and in a way this began the process of bringing it back together. A bit of a stretch maybe but I have to keep myself going somehow!
The accelerator pedal on a 1970 Mustang is mounted to the firewall with a pair of bolts through a mount located approximately halfway up the shaft. A cable connects this rod to the carburetor. The pedal itself is plastic with a stainless trim ring. The trim ring has bent tabs that hold it onto the plastic pedal. This assembly is then screwed onto the rod with a spring to allow the pedal to rock back and forth.
The pedal itself is plastic which leads to it being worn down and the rough texture smoothed out. In addition, it is likely the stainless is a bit dirty/stained due to being in the footwell where it could be wet/snowed/salted. I lightly cleaned/polished the stainless. It could likely be cleaned up a lot more with the proper tools (buffing wheel). But for something that is going under my feet, I didn’t want to make it too nice!
